Aphrodite' Calycanthus Plant

Looking for something out of the ordinary? You discovered it in the 'Aphrodite' calycanthus! This shrub is covered in large, glossy leaves and explodes with gigantic cupped flowers that resemble a deep crimson magnolia.

 They begin in early July and continue throughout the season; in cooler climates, like our West Michigan trial garden, they bloom all summer.

 This is a big shrub that requires plenty of area to thrive, but if you have the space, there are a few better ways to use it!

Aphrodite' is a cross between Calycanthus, our native plant, and xSinocalycanthus, an Asian species. If you're asking if it's fragrant, the answer is that it varies.

 The fragrance changes depending on the age of the bloom, the time of day, and the flower itself. Some people smell like pineapple, others like apples, still others like bubblegum, and still others get no aroma at all.
